چکیده

An association is described between hypothermia occurring in anaesthetized babies and early postoperative morbidity and death. Sixty-seven children under one year old had operations in 1960, of whom twelve died; seven of these cases (which are described) were associated with hypothermia. While other factors were undoubtedly involved it seems that hypothermia was the principal factor responsible for the deaths. Hypothermia is most likely to occur during long operations, in air-conditioned theatres and when respiration is controlled. Ways of preventing inadvertent hypothermia are discussed and the importance of temperature monitoring and of rigid maintenance of normal temperatures is emphasized.

Using Air Cushion in the Prevention of Occipital Pressure Ulcer in Children Undergoing Heart Surgery

Background & Aims:The prevalence of congenital heart (CHD) defects is about 6-8 per 1000 live births, more than half of which will require surgery during the first year of life. In Iran, the rate of diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases is increasing, so that the mortality caused by them in the intervals of 1989 to 2006 has increased from 27 to 30%. CHD accounts for almost one-third of all conge...

Development of a Pilot Plant Solar Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioner for the Northern Region of Iran

In a 10-ton capacity pilot plant solar liquid desiccant air conditioner (LDAC) developed, dehumidification of the outside air is achieved through a honeycomb packed-bed heat and mass exchanger, using lithium chloride solution as the desiccant. The dry air obtained from the dehumidification process is evaporative cooled inside a cooling pad and directed into the conditioned space. The dilute sol...

Thermal comfort of the surgical staff in an operating theatre: a numerical study on laminar and mixing ventilation systems

The indoor air quality in an operating theatre affects both patient health and the well-being of the surgical team members. Health care facilities, and operating theatres in particular, require ventilation and air conditioning for thermal comfort and removal of contaminants. Although the patient undergoing surgery is given the highest priority, it is important to consider the comfort of surgica...

Comparison of Performances for Air-Standard Atkinson and Dual Combustion Cycles with Heat Transfer Considerations

There are heat losses during the cycle of real engine that are neglected in ideal air-standard analysis. In this paper, the effect of heat transfer on the net output work is shown and thermal efficiency of the air-standard Atkinson and the Dual combustion cycles are analyzed. Comparison of performances of the air-standard Atkinson and the Dual combustion cycles with heat transfer considerations...

A Proposed Methodology to Control Body Temperature in Patients at Risk of Hypothermia by means of Active Rewarming Systems

Hypothermia is a common complication in patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia. It has been noted that, during the first hour of surgery, the patient's internal temperature (Tcore) decreases by 0.5-1.5°C due to the vasodilatory effect of anesthetic gases, which affect the body's thermoregulatory system by inhibiting vasoconstriction. Thus a continuous check on patient temperature ...
